I’ve been using google alerts for about a year now and think it’s really helpful. It seems though that it doesn’t include facebook in its trawl through the net. Are you aware of a (free) tool that does that? Twitter feeds also aren’t included but many people who care about that will have their HootSuites/TweetDecks etc set up.

Hi Philip,

Check out the Google Adwords keyword finder at:
https://adwords.google.co.uk/select/KeywordToolExternal

Type in “internet marketing” and see if there are any long tail keywords you can use for your Alerts.

Hi Sean,
I’m a newcomer to your stuff & the Google alert seems very useful.
However, I’m just starting out – helping local businesses increase their sales on-line. So I suppose it would be classed as Internet Marketing, but I wouldn’t dare put that as an alert – I’d never be able to leave the monitor!
Any suggestions to keep the info returned, down to a manageable level, while still being useful would be very much appreciated.

Nik – Thanks for your comments, let me know how you get on with the tool. I just found out yesterday that one of my competitors is laying off 5 sales trainers and I’m on a recruitment drive! Nice. And I found out through google alerts!

Cheers Sean, i receive your email allerts and find them very useful indeed, good to see a local Midlander doing this sort of stuff as all you usually get is the yankee whine of zig ziglar, david sandler or the like trying to make you sell the American way! Good Brummie professional sales people doing the doo and making a mark, big up to you Sean!
